The Martha Washington Inn, A Camberley Hotel
Abingdon, VA The
Martha Washington Inn is located on nine acres in the heart of historic
downtown Abingdon, Virginia. The town, chartered in 1778, is itself
a Virginia Historic Landmark. It is the oldest town west of the
Blue Ridge Mountains and is between the Great Smoky and Allegheny
Mountains in the western part of the state where Virginia, Kentucky,
Tennessee, and North Carolina meet. The Inn, built in 1832 as the
private mansion of a prestigious Southern family, is replete with
its own gentle ghosts. It served as a private college for girls
and, during the Civil War, sheltered wounded soldiers in the Virginia
Shenandoah. The Inn’s lush, path-lined, perennial gardens
with gazebo and conversation nooks have long been a favorite for
weddings. Antique-filled guest and public rooms, fine and casual
dining, intimate meeting space, and elegant ballroom facilities
serve the needs of a variety of clients.
LOCATION
Tucked away in the highlands of Southwestern Virginia, The Martha
Washington Inn is located just half a mile north of Exit 17 off
of Interstate 81. Abingdon, an historic town with brick walks and
historic homes, is the oldest incorporated town west of the Blue
Ridge Mountains. The Appalachian Trail is just 13 miles away. The
Virginia Creeper Trail, another popular trail enjoyed by hikers,
bikers, and horseback riders, begins in Abingdon. Easily accessible
to major metropolitan areas, Abingdon and this historic hotel are
just a few hours drive for many and provide a charming change of
pace for visitors.
